This course aims to convey meaningful connections between knowledge about Japanese culture and language by discussing both Japanese traditional culture and counterculture, covering issues such as Zen, traditional crafts, foods, spiritual culture, pop culture, and technology. This course also analyzes the pragmatic aspects of the Japanese language, such as politeness strategies and apologies, based on cultural perspectives. Thus, students are expected to create their own cultural portfolios of Japanese cultures from a comparative perspective, further leading to an understanding of Japanese and the students’ own language. As a learning approach, this course employs students’ autonomous learning through discussions, debates, and presentations of project work, whereby students are expected to gain the motivation to start or continue learning Japanese.
